Cremaster 3
From mint media
The Cremaster Cycle are called Art films. I guess this means they are not expected to comply with conventions. This is certainly true of Cremaster 3, shown as part of the Auckland International Film Festival. Going in I knew nothing about Matthew Barney or about any of his previous films - what was I letting myself in for?
Well Cremaster 3 did give me something to think about. I enjoyed the film on an aesthetic level. It has beautiful photography, landscapes, bizarre and imaginative costumes and spectacular sets.
So why did I leave the theatre thinking too myself: "With all the millions spent on the production, why do I feel like something was missing?"
I was not satisfied. It's like Barney bit off more than he could chew. Maybe some studio executive came up to him one day and said: "Why don't you have 100 million to make an art movie". Who would refuse such an offer?
In Cremaster 3 you can expect to experience:
- Fatalistic cars
- Punk rock
- Feline women
- Fantastic shoes and gloves (love the gloves)
- Weird Celtic giants
- A strange musical instrument involving piano wire and an elevator filled with concrete
- Appalling bar service
- Unusual ways of slicing potatoes
- Dedicated servants
- Masonic rituals
If that sounds interesting, it is. But be ready for three hours of dreamlike visual poetry with occasional quirky humour.
